...had a young nose with a whiff of judicious, buttery oak . very Montrachet-like. In fact, I would have guessed White Burgundy if served to me blind since the wine was so buttery . its youth seemed to mask its Rhonish characteristics. Ray chipped in how the Chave Blancs always have this Burgundian edge in their youth. The palate was very rich and oily with a long finish and a pinch of what I like to call .the bitterness of youth,. a touch of bitter flavors more associated with the wine being young then anything else. The finish also had good minerality and freshness. Jean-Louis called 2001 .a good vintage with good balance. and also chipped in that .the problem with the world today is that many are trying to make bigger wines. - JK

Super chalky nose with peach blossom and orange blossom leading to peach, orange citrus and orange peel flavors. This still has a little of the flesh and puppy fat on the palate. Still building. Extremely complex and very powerful. Drink now. - JS

From Rocoules: Musky citrus and mineral aromas of noteworthy vivacity. Then rich and fat in the mouth, with considerable volume. From Peleat: Lemon and mandarin orange on the nose. Intense flavor of pineapple, slightly hardened by the CO2 From Maison Blanche (in stainless steel, like the last couple of samples): Exotic aromas of mirabelle and white flowers. Fresh and juicy but also chewy, even powerful. A bit more raw in the mouth, with a liqueur-like ripeness. From L'Hermite, in barrel: Hazelnut and spicy oak dominate the nose. Juicy, fruity and quite dry, with a tight supporting mineral structure. A rather uncompromising sample. L'Hermite contributes backbone to the blend. - VM

I tasted component parts of the 2001 Hermitage blanc. Aromas of acacia flowers, honeysuckle, and citrus were followed by a medium to full-bodied white with loads of glycerin as well as heady fruit and alcohol. Elegant, medium to full-bodied, and crisper, it is more obviously backward than the 2000. - WA
